Piper PA-18 Super Cub Seat Refurbishment: Lightweight Design with Classic Detail
The Piper PA-18-135 Super Cub is the definition of backcountry capability, rugged, minimalist, and ready to land where few aircraft dare. In line with its utilitarian spirit, Generation Global recently completed a custom seat refurbishment for this iconic aircraft. Though small in size, this project required a high level of precision and attention to detail to deliver comfort without compromising the Super Cub’s weight-saving design philosophy.
The Project: New Seat Cover and Cushion
This Piper Super Cub interior refresh focused on creating a lightweight yet durable seat solution, crafted specifically for the aircraft’s unique, non-adjustable welded seat frame. The result was a custom seat cover and cushion assembly that enhanced comfort while maintaining the stripped-back utility for which the PA-18 is renowned.

Frame and Fitting

Seat Frame: One-piece welded frame with no adjustment functionality

Installation: The seat back cover slides over the top of the frame, while the seat base cover domes into place on the side rails, leaving the front frame exposed as per original spec
Cover and Cushion Construction

Cushion Fit: Seat covers were designed as enclosed cushion covers (like squabs), providing a clean and structured appearance

Material: High-quality red aviation leather, paired with matching red stitching for a cohesive look

Design: Center panel includes horizontal seams to break up the surface visually and provide ergonomic structure

Branding: Original Piper Cub logo embroidered in full colour on the seat back
Practical Features

Document Storage: A large seatback pocket was included for storing maps and documents

Additional Storage: Two clear external window pockets were stitched onto the back pocket for quick access to ID, safety documents, or checklists
